The dawn of extreme soybean crush capacity in the United States has arrived. The US Department of Agriculture said in its Jan. 2 Fats and Oils: Oilseed Crushings, Production, Consumption and Stocks report that 6 million tons (200 million bushels) of soybeans were crushed in November, up 5.4% from 5.69 million tons (190 million bushels) crushed in the same month last year. Crude soybean oil produced in November was 2.325 billion pounds, up 5.7% from 2.2 billion pounds in November 2022, and once refined soybean oil produced was 1.707 billion pounds, 4.5% higher than the 1.663 billion pounds a year earlier.  

As it looks to extend trade liberalization with Ukraine into 2025, the European Commission is considering methods of allowing eastern EU member countries to restrict imports, Reuters reported. The EU has suspended import duties and quotas for Ukrainian imports since June 2022 to support its economy following Russia's February 2022 invasion. Cheap Ukrainian grain has spurred protests by governments, farmers and truckers in nearby countries such as Poland and Hungary.

A weak tone in world wheat markets persisted into 2024, although there were some bullish reactions to cold weather across the Northern Hemisphere in the closing weeks of January. US Wheat Associates (USW) in its Jan. 19 Weekly Price Report noted that wheat was lower as a lack of supportive news has allowed bearish trends to continue.

Among a trove of US Department of Agriculture (USDA) reports released Jan. 12 was an estimated smaller area planted to winter wheat than in 2023. But US producers may be poised to harvest a larger crop in 2024 after a much better moisture situation improved initial crop conditions and generated ideas of a return to trendline yields in the US Plains. Poor export prospects for US wheat could mean a larger all-wheat carryout for the next two seasons. The USDA in its Winter Wheat and Canola Seedings report estimated the area planted to winter wheat for harvest in 2024 at 34,425,000 acres, down 2,274,000 acres, or 6%, from 2023. The year-over-year decline alone might seem steep, but a closer look shows 2023 acreage was a spike. The USDA’s estimate of 34.4 million acres is the second largest since 2016.  

President Cao Derong had an online meeting with Ms. Veronika Nikishina, CEO of the Russian Export Center, to discuss cooperation plans for the new year on Jan. 12.
